It is that time of the year again! If you are sitting for a performance appraisal this year and wondering if it will go well then you have landed on just the right page. This is the time when the employee has a detailed discussion with their team lead or manager on the targets achieved during the financial year.
The object of an appraisal meeting is to review the employee's performance basis their goals set at the beginning of the year. During the meeting, other than the accomplishments, the manager also discusses the employee's growth graph, addresses concerns, and establishes new targets among other things.
We spoke to Manpreet Kaur Grover, Director, Whizz Communications, Josh Talks speaker, PR Consultant, Social media strategist, and a specialist in communication/public speaking coaching, parent coaching, life skills/soft skills, and asked her to share some tips to nail an appraisal meeting.
1. Enter with a warm smile and confidence - No matter how anxious you are about the appraisal meeting, it is always a good idea to walk into the room with a smile on your face. Be confident but if you fail, try to fake it. It will make a whole lot of difference!
2. Pen down your achievements - During the appraisal meeting, you will be talking about your growth through an entire year. It is difficult to remember everything. So, write down everything. Make a list of your accomplishments and speak about them in detail with your manager during the appraisal chat.
3. Don’t only brag about your hard skills - The expert shared that instead of highlighting your hard skills like marketing, copywriting, and designing, you should underline your soft skills like communication, decision-making, and time management. This adds an emotional quotient and makes the manager realise your leadership qualities.
4. Speak about the new skills you had learned and intend to learn - Your manager would like to know what new skills you learned in the last year and what would you like to learn on the new year basis your career and self-development plan.

5. Ask about the company’s goals - With the new year, you will be handed over a new set of goals. You must ask about the company’s goals in the coming year. Basis that, let your manager know how your goals for the coming year are aligned with it.
6. Speak about the issues - Don’t hesitate to share the issues you faced during the last year. Let your manager know how you overcame the challenges, this will act as a big positive for you. Next, let them know where you seek help.

7. Leave with a smile and commitment - Before wrapping up the meeting, make sure you ask your manager for feedback. Let them know you will work on the negatives. Make sure you don’t lose your cool during the meeting. Always leave with a big smile on your face.
