Baxi Sisters’ Birthday Visit Ends in Tragedy

Dhir and Heer Baxi, both in their early twenties, had travelled from London to Ahmedabad to surprise their beloved grandmother on her birthday. Overflowing with excitement, they made the trip to share a special family moment. After celebrating, they boarded the Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner to return to the UK, unaware that it would be their final journey.

Their cousin, Ishan Baxi, who lives in Ahmedabad, shared memories of the sisters in a statement to the PA news agency. He described Heer as a passionate product manager who had a deep love for statistics and finance, and Dhir as a talented fashion designer who studied at the prestigious Parsons Paris School of Art and Design.

Speaking with The Independent, Ishan said, “They both had strong values, always knowing what was right and wrong. Their dream was to become successful, to travel the world with their parents without worry. They embraced modern thinking but never let go of their traditional roots.”

The sole survivor, a British citizen of Indian origin, is currently receiving medical treatment. Speaking to local media, the man recalled hearing a loud sound moments after takeoff, before everything went dark.

“We are still confirming the total number of casualties, including those who died in the building struck by the aircraft,” said senior police official Vidhi Chaudhary in a statement to Reuters.

She clarified that the earlier reported death toll of 294 had been revised to over 240, as some body parts had been mistakenly counted more than once.
