Let's admit it: purchasing an engagement ring is a tough puzzle to solve. The availability of so many choices makes it all the more difficult to make a decision. But, a report suggests that Gen-Z is pretty clear about what they want for their engagement day and is directing a resurrection of vintage-interested engagement rings, ones with bold coloured stones, and maximalist stacking. Mr Neil Dutta, Managing Director at online diamond jewellery company Angelic Diamonds, shares why this is happening.
3 Gen-Z Trends in 2025 For Engagement Rings
Engagement day is a big event in a couple's life because that's technically the start of their intertwined lives. So, choosing a ring to mark that occasion is usually an uphill task but Gen-Z is changing this, as per Pinterest's wedding trends report. Mr Dutta breaks down the 3 trends set by Gen-Z in 2025 related to engagement rings:
1) Unique Shapes and Vintage Silhouettes
“Couples today want their engagement rings to feel like an extension of their own story, not just a traditional symbol,” says Mr Dutta.
He added that a "real shift" is happening "towards individuality, with people choosing unique shapes and vintage-inspired rings that stand out."
Citing Pinterest’s new data, he said, "searches for vintage cushion-cut engagement rings are up by 175%, kite-cut rings by 40%, and heart-shaped rings by 34%. There’s also been an extraordinary 1,458% increase in interest for 1920s vintage wedding rings, showing just how much nostalgia is influencing choices right now.”
But why is the trend gaining momentum? Dutta explains, “Nostalgia is a powerful theme at the moment. Vintage-inspired rings feel special as they offer a sense of romance and timelessness, whilst also allowing couples to express their individuality with designs that draw on the charm and character of past eras but are crafted with a modern twist."

2) Maximalist Ring Stack and Mixed Metals
“Maximalist ring stacking is one of the most exciting trends we’re seeing in 2025,” says Mr Dutta. “Pinterest data shows searches for unique wedding ring stacks have soared by over 1,600%, with mixed-metal ring stacks up nearly 300%. This clearly reflects a growing desire among couples to create personalised, layered looks that feel bold and expressive.”
However, this trend is not only about "piling on rings. Couples are choosing to mix different metals, shapes and stones to build a look that is unique to them, with each ring representing a milestone or memory. Each stack is deeply personal."
But why is the trend gaining momentum? The rise of maximalist stacking also ties into wider fashion shifts. “After years of minimalist jewellery dominating, 2024 and 2025 (so far) have seen a clear move towards bold, statement-making pieces,” Mr Dutta notes. “I believe that this is part of a broader cultural shift where self-expression and individuality are becoming more important to people. And, well, maximalist rings allow people to break free from minimalistic traditions and create something truly their own.”
3) Fancy Colourful Facets
"Pinterest data shows searches for pink diamond wedding rings up 349%, sapphire engagement rings up 328%, and brown diamond engagement rings up 179%," says Mr Dutta of Angelic Diamonds.
But why is the trend gaining momentum? Dutta explains, “Coloured stones offer a fresh alternative to traditional white diamonds, and they’re often more affordable too. For many couples, this means you can choose a larger or more unique stone, or invest more in a bespoke setting, without stretching your budget. Lab-grown coloured stones in particular can be significantly less expensive than natural diamonds of a similar size and quality, making them a practical option for those who want something special without compromise.”
Affordability is just one part of the appeal. “Coloured gemstones let couples choose something that reflects their personality and tells their story, whether it’s a birthstone, a favourite colour, or a gem with special meaning,” says Dutta. “Sapphires, emeralds, and rubies are all popular for their symbolism and durability, but we’re also seeing more unusual choices for yellow-toned stones after Lady Gaga, Nicola Peltz and Sofia Richie were all seen sporting one in the last year.
“Ultimately, these trends are about self-expression and meaning. Couples want rings that reflect who they are, and vintage styles – with their charm, character, and sense of nostalgia – offer the perfect way to do that," wraps up Mr Neil Dutta.
