This winter season, indulge yourself in the rich aromas and flavours of India's beloved beverage. Here is a simple and easy 5-step recipe to make the perfect homemade masala chai, whether it’s for chilly mornings, afternoons, or cosy gatherings. In this article, we will tell you all about the recipe shared by our expert, Pradip Pani, Executive Chef at Grand Mercure Mysore.
How To Make Masala Chai At Home?
Take your favourite spices like cinnamon sticks, cloves, cardamom pods, and peppercorns and crush them slightly. Make sure that you are not pulverising them into a powder and just slightly crushing them into small pieces. Then, add these crushed spices to a saucepan, pour some water and grated (or sliced) ginger. Bring everything to a boil over high heat. If you don’t want the ginger’s taste to dominate the chai, reduce the amount of ginger and slice instead of grating. Now, reduce the heat slightly to medium/medium-low and maintain a simmer for 15 minutes or until the water reduces by about one-third. Then, add tea powder/leaves and milk and lower the heat to low. Cover it with a lid and let it cook for about five minutes to allow the flavours to meld. Then, turn off the heat and let steep for five more minutes (covered) or longer for deeper flavour. Add sugar to taste. Strain through a fine mesh strainer before serving and enjoy!
