Sweets and sweet dishes are savoured by all and are considered extremely auspicious for any happy occasion in India.

This Ganesh Chaturthi extend your offerings to Lord Ganesha by making this famous South Indian sweet dish, Payasam, and please him.

Significance Of Payasam

Indian festivals are incomplete without kheer (pudding). Payasam is a kheer that has originated from Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Ganesh Ji is offered Payasam every year on his arrival on our land. It is believed that Lord Ganesha blesses all those who offer him kheer.

Easy And Quick Recipe To Make Payasam

  • Start by pouring 2 tablespoons ghee on a heavy pan or kadai, let it melt and then add 12-15 cashews and fry them on low heat until golden.
  • Once done, remove the cashews and add 1 tablespoon of raisins in the hot ghee. Fry on low heat until they swell. Stir occasionally.
  • Once done, put them away with the cashews.
  • Next, you have to roast 1 cup semiya (vermicelli). Before starting to fry, break them into parts to ensure they are easily cooked.
  • Add semiya to the same pan. Make sure it is roasting on low heat. Stir often to ensure even cooking. Since these cook fast, don’t leave them unattended
  • Once they turn brown, add 3.5 cups of milk. For a thin payasam, you can add more milk.
  • Mix it well while keeping it on a low or medium-low temperature until the semiya becomes soft. Make sure to stir occasionally.
  • Simmer the payasam. Scrape the sides of the pan where milk is gathered and mix it with the rest.
  • Once semiya has softened, add about 4 tablespoons of sugar or as per your preference.
  • Add ½ teaspoon cardamom powder and mix well on low or medium-low flame for 2-3 minutes. The sugar will be mixed too.
  • Once done, turn off the heat and mix the fried cashew and raisins. You can also keep some for garnishing.
  • Serve the payasam hot and enjoy!
