Savour the taste of the most favourite South Indian dish, Idli! A simple yet impressive idli recipe made using urad dal, basmati rice, fenugreek seeds and toasted in sesame oil. They are tasty, healthy, filling and easy to make it's a perfect breakfast food for fitness freak! Here's how you can easily prepare it at home.
Ingredients
- 2 1/2 cup basmati rice
- ½ tbsp fenugreek seeds
- 5 tbsp sesame oil
- 1 ½ urad dal
- 1 ½ tsp salt
- Water as required
Directions
- Wash Urad dal and rice in separate pans and add fenugreek seeds to the rice.
- Soak them separately in water for 4-6 hours.
- Next, strain the water from urad dal and grind it to a fine paste.
- Similarly, grind the rice to a coarse paste and then whisk both the mixture together. Grind till thick, smooth, bubbly & frothy. The idli batter should not turn hot or even warm as it makes dense idli.
Fermenting Idli Batter
- Set the batter aside in a warm place for at least 8 to 12 hours until the batter ferments and rises well.
- A well-fermented batter will yield good soft idli, so make sure to ferment it correctly.
- Next, grease the idli stand with ghee or oil. Take a ladleful of batter and fill the idli mould.
- Add half a cup of water in the idli steamer and let it boil. Put the idli stand inside and close the lid, and let it steam for exactly 10 minutes on a medium-high flame.
- Now take the idli set out and let it cool.
- With the help of a spoon or sharp knife, scoop the idlis out and serve them with coconut chutney!
