Apple has broken new ground in movie marketing by launching the world's first haptic trailer exclusively for iPhone users. The tech giant unveiled this innovative experience for Brad Pitt's upcoming Formula 1 movie during its Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) 2025, where Formula 1 references dominated the presentation.
What Is a Haptic Trailer?
A haptic trailer enhances the traditional viewing experience by sending vibrations through your phone, matching key moments such as engine revs, crashes, ticking clocks, and even seatbelt clicks. Apple’s trailer for F1 The Movie brings this sensory technology to movie promotion for the first time on smartphones.
This feature is somewhat similar to 4DX cinema, which uses motion-enabled seats and environmental effects like wind and lightning to immerse audiences. However, Apple’s approach brings this tactile experience into the palm of your hand, available exclusively on iPhones running iOS 18.4 or later via the Apple TV app.
How Does the Haptic Trailer Work?
When watching the trailer on a compatible iPhone, the device’s Taptic Engine vibrates in sync with the film’s audio and visual cues. For example, during a crash scene or engine roar, your phone vibrates subtly, simulating the intensity of Formula 1 racing. This creates a multi-sensory experience, making the trailer more engaging without overwhelming the viewer.

A First in Film Marketing on Smartphones
According to reports, this is the first movie trailer in the world to use haptic feedback technology on a smartphone. While gaming consoles like the PlayStation 5 have used advanced haptics for years, Apple’s move sets a new standard for cinematic promotion.
