As the world celebrates World Pilots' Day 2025, we take to the skies with Captain Swathi Priyanka Kammula. Captain Swathi is a trailblazing pilot who embodies the spirit of adventure and determination. Learn about her inspiring journey and take a look at her expert tips for young female aspiring pilots.
From Boarding School To The Cockpit: Captain Kammula's Story
“Flying has always been my first love. The role of a pilot fascinated me from the moment I learned what the job truly entailed. I knew early on that I wanted nothing else but to become a professional pilot. It all began in the 4th standard when my principal at boarding school planted a seed in my mind about aviation and the role of a pilot. That was it—my decision was made. I wanted to fly,” said Captain Swathi.
“After completing my +2, I began researching flying schools, both in India and abroad. Eventually, I chose to do my initial training in California, USA, and honestly, I cherish every single day I spent there. From my very first joy ride to my first solo flight, and then my first solo cross-country, every moment was nothing short of magical,” she reflected.
Empowering Moments In The Skies
Captain Kammula fondly remembered the freedom to choose her destinations during cross-country flying, which felt incredibly empowering. “From low-level manoeuvres over landscapes to flying above tulip gardens in bloom, those moments made me realise: I belong in the sky. Flying became more than just a career, it became a part of who I am,” she shared.
Talking about her struggles finding a job, she said, “Finding a job in India wasn’t easy. It took patience and relentless determination. After a long wait and what felt like a never-ending struggle, I finally landed a job in General Aviation (GA), flying an incredible aircraft—the Citation. I've been flying the same fleet ever since.”
“From bustling airports like Delhi and Mumbai to remote airfields like Banswara and Sirohi, this job has given me experiences I’ll treasure forever. I absolutely love what I do, and I admire the versatility of a light jet like the Citation CJ2,” added Captain Swathi.
Overcoming Challenges As A Woman In Aviation
As a woman in a traditionally male-dominated field, Captain Kammula faced her share of challenges. There were moments when she was the only woman in the room or in the sky, and some people raised eyebrows or doubted her abilities. But she never let that hold her back. With relentless preparation, strong focus on safety and precision, and the support of mentors, she proved her capabilities and earned respect for her work.

“Today, I wear this uniform not just for myself, but for every young girl who dreams of flying. If my journey can make hers a little easier, that is the real win,” said Captain Swathi.
Captain Kammula's Inspirational Message For The Next Generation
Captain Kammula said, “It feels like flying through history — like every time I take off, I’m carrying the dreams of the women who came before me and clearing a little more sky for those who’ll come next. Being part of this new generation of women in aviation means we’re not just breaking barriers — we’re redefining what’s normal. The cockpit is no longer just a man’s world, and every time I slide into that left seat, I know I’m proof of that. There’s still work to do, still ceilings to shatter, but up here? We’re not just flying airplanes — we’re flying past limits, past doubt, and into futures we were once told we couldn’t have. And that feeling? It’s freedom. It’s power. It's a legacy.”
“And here’s something worth remembering: India has the highest percentage of women pilots in the world. According to DGCA, 15% of the total pilots in India are women. That’s a powerful statement. To every young girl out there, dream big. Don't let stereotypes define your path. And to all the women already walking this journey: let’s come together, support one another, and lift each other higher. Because when women empower women, we all fly further,” she continued.
Empowerment In The Cockpit
“Honestly, every moment spent in and around the aircraft feels empowering. Every takeoff is unique, every landing is different. The cockpit is a complex, high-tech environment, blending both hardware and software, requiring precision, focus, and constant learning. Every day in aviation brings something new to discover. From understanding weather systems to mastering satellite navigation, from knowing every detail of your aircraft's specifications to managing flights in challenging weather—this field is vast and limitless,” said Captain Swathi.
