P.V. Sindhu Wins Gold Medal At BWF World Championships, says 'I Have Waited For This Victory'

Making India proud yet again, P.V. Sindhu gifts her mother a history she created for India on the World Championships Map!

P.V. Sindhu has been making India proud for a while now but this time she has created history, marking India on the World Championships map in the field of badminton and we could not be more proud! This new champion clinched gold at BWF World Championships and became the first Indian ever and the first Indian woman as well to have done so!

The match was held at St Jakobshalle in Basel, Switzerland, where she won the medal and it also happened to be her mother's birthday and wow what a gift any mom could ever get!

When she won the match at theWorld Badminton Championship 2019 and dedicated her title to her mother, the packed stadium said in unison: “happy birthday to you”, a wish that reverberated around the indoor facility.

Sindhu beat Japanese star Nozomi Okuhara with 21-7, 21-7 in a one-sided World Championships final in history which was over in 16 minutes!

Apparently, even the legendary Prakash Padukone, Deepika Padukone's father, had fallen short, and even Saina Nehwal got till the bronze (2015) and silver (2017) at the world meet.

Speaking on her win, the 24-year-old told media: “I won this for my country. I am proud to be an Indian. It was very special to see the Tricolour flying and to hear the national anthem. I was getting goosebumps.”

In 2017 and 2018, Sindhu won the silver and in 2013 and 2014, she clinched bronze.

Sindhu continued: “I lost last year in the final and the year before that. I am really very, very happy. I have waited for this victory, and finally, I’ve become the world champion. I’ve no words to express my feelings because I was waiting for this.”

She also thanked her coaches — South Korean Kim Ji Hyun and Pullela Gopichand.

“A lot of credit goes to my coaches — Gopi Sir and Kim, and also to my parents as well, my support staff and all my sponsors who believed in me.”

On her game plan for the final, Sindhu said: “I was just focused on my game. I was not thinking of it as a final. I played like any other match — a semi-final or a quarters. ”

“Usually, Japanese girls play a lot of rallies. But I was able to dominate the long rallies. I maintained the lead and was able to finish it off," she added.

Speaking of Tokyo 2020, she told media: “Of course. The qualifications are going on and I will want to do well. But today, I just want to enjoy and celebrate and not think of anything else.”

Sindhu’s former coach Vimal Kumar was ecstatic. He said: "It was a masterclass from Sindhu. She was simply brilliant. She gave Okuhara no chance. Sindhu was dominating in every department. She was moving well and her approach to the net was simply too powerful.”

Back home, her mother Vijaya said: “This was the best gift of my lifetime.”

Of course oodles of congratulatory messages flowed in. Twitter was a storm! It started with Saina who was one of the first to congratulate her. She tweeted: “Congratulations to @Pvsindhu1 for the first-ever world championships gold medal from India."

Union Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju told media: ""Today is a big day for India. PV Sindhu has created a history. She has won the World Championships in the badminton. This is not only for the badminton but for the Indian sports a big big day.We are very proud of Sindhu. I on behalf of the people of India, and on behalf of Prime Minister Narendra Modi extend hearty congratulations to her."

"So, the achievement of Sindhu is going to be a milestone for our country. Olympics are 10 months away and before that winning the World Championships is a huge morale boost for the whole Indian contingent. I'm very excited and going to discuss much more to ensure that how champions are to be produced at a very young age. We are going to have multiple academies in the country. We want to see more Sindhu's in the coming years," he added.
