Her space journey began in December 2006, when she flew aboard Space Shuttle Discovery for Expedition 14 and Expedition 15. On that mission, she completed multiple spacewalks, helping assemble and maintain parts of the ISS.

In 2012, Williams returned to the station as part of Expedition 32 and Expedition 33. On that mission, she also became commander of the ISS, a role few women have held.

Her third and final mission was one of the most talked-about in recent years. Williams launched to space in June 2024 aboard Boeing’s new Starliner spacecraft in a test flight with fellow astronaut Butch Wilmore. The mission was scheduled for just over a week, but technical problems with the spacecraft meant they had to stay aboard the ISS for more than nine months before returning to Earth in March 2025 aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule, according to NASA portal.
