Whether you're a teenager looking to assert your individuality or an adult seeking to refresh your style, ear piercing has become a rite of passage for many. However, if it is your first time getting an ear piercing, you must familiarise yourself with caution and knowledge. Here is a beginner’s guide to ear piercing, shared by our expert, Sahil Bali, an artist at Devil’z Tattooz.
Sahil said, “Getting a piercing is a personal experience, and as a piercing artist, I always want my clients to feel informed, comfortable, and confident about the process. Whether it’s your first piercing or you’re adding to your collection, make sure to take care of these things.”
“The first step in getting a piercing is selecting a professional piercing studio. Look for licensed establishments that follow health and safety regulations. A clean, sterile environment is essential to minimise infection risks. Don’t hesitate to ask about the artist’s experience and the studio’s hygiene standards,” shared Bali.
Sahil mentioned, “When you arrive, your piercing artist will usually ask you about your health history, allergies, and if you’ve had any past piercing experiences. This is the time to ask any questions you have. For example, discuss the jewellery material, as hypoallergenic options like titanium, niobium, or surgical steel are best for sensitive skin.”

“The artist will mark the area where the piercing will go, allowing you to approve its placement. Once you’re satisfied, they’ll use a sterilised needle (never a piercing gun) to create a clean hole. The process is quick, usually lasting just a few seconds,” shared Sahil.
“Piercings heal over time, and how well you care for them will affect the healing process. The artist will provide aftercare instructions, which typically include cleaning the piercing with saline solution, avoiding touching it with dirty hands, and refraining from swimming in pools or oceans until fully healed,” said Sahil.
“To minimise complications, avoid playing with your piercing, sleeping on it, or using harsh chemicals (like alcohol or hydrogen peroxide) for cleaning. If you notice excessive redness, swelling, or discharge, consult your piercing artist or a healthcare professional,” said the expert.
