Sewing a Side Hustle: How Gen Z is turning their DIY skills into micro-brands

Mahajan said, “Let’s just face it, sewing is no longer just your grandma’s hobby. For today’s Gen Z, it’s a statement on personal choices and a booming side hustle. We can see the writing on the wall very clearly around us, ‘Gen Z is redefining this tradition’, transforming sewing into a modern-day superpower. Sewing Meets Social Media

Scroll through Instagram and you will quickly fall down a rabbit-hole of handmade corsets, upcycled denim, leftover fabric used to create creative/functional, and reimagined thrift shop finds. Hashtags like #Sewingrecycled, #Upcycledsewing and #UpcycledFashion have amassed billions of views, enabling young creators not only to cultivate audiences but also sell directly to fans. “According to a 2024 report, 69% of Gen Z consumers discover new brands via social media, a significant increase from the 45% it was in 2023, ,” shared Seema.

Platforms such as Etsy and Instagram Shops have eliminated traditional retail barriers, allowing creators to establish micro-brands from their bedrooms. What once required a presence in brick-and-mortar stores can now be accomplished with a sewing machine, good lighting, and a well-timed reel.

Furthermore, unlike the fast fashion boomers of the earlier generations, Gen Z is motivated by purpose with a stronger set of values in play. “Surveys indicate that 62% of Gen Z shoppers prefer sustainable brands, with an impressive 73% willing to pay a premium for sustainable products. This shift in consumer mindset benefits sewing entrepreneurs who champion repurposed materials, slow fashion, and transparent business practices. Instead of mass-producing transient trends, these young makers offer something far more compelling, customisation, individuality, and ethics. From patchwork jackets crafted from old duvet covers to bespoke festival wear from vintage sarees, sewing micro-brands are giving their customers a story to wear,” said Mahajan.

Technology, the Landscape Transformer

Sewing is not stuck in the past, either. Modern entry-level machines now feature touchscreen interfaces, USB ports, and extensive built-in decorative stitch libraries. Digital design tools such as CLO 3D and Adobe Illustrator allow creators to conceptualise pieces virtually before even threading a needle. Additionally, platforms like YouTube have made learning more accessible than ever, fostering an online community built on shared expertise, pattern hacks, and encouragement. For Gen Z, who grew up with Pinterest boards and digital tutorials, learning a new skill to one’s self is second nature.
