The Story of Garbarakshambigai Amman In Tamil Nadu
As per the Sri Garbarakshambigai Temple website, its legend states that “The story of Garbarakshambigai Amman takes us back to an era when sages resided in secluded forests. In a place known as Mullai Vanam, (or Jasmine Garden), two sages named Gouthama Muni and Gargeya Muni lived in an ashram. Nidhruva and Vedikai, a couple who served the sages, yearned for a child. They sought the guidance of the sages and shared their heartfelt desire to become parents. Responding to their prayer, the sages instructed them to perform pujas and worship Goddess Parvathi in the form of Garbarakshambigai Amman. Miraculously, their prayers were answered, and Vedikai conceived a child.”
During her pregnancy, Nidhruva travelled to visit Lord Varuna, while she was away, Vedikai unintentionally offended sage Urdhvapada by neglecting to offer him hospitality. He cursed her with a disease called Rayatchu, endangering her and her unborn child's lives. Desperate, Vedikai prayed to Garbarakshambigai Amman, who intervened by taking the unborn child and placing it in a pot. Miraculously, the foetus developed into a healthy baby, fulfilling the devoted couple's wish with immense joy. Later, they named the child Naidhuruvan.
