From palatial Mughal and Rajputana architecture of the north to the beautiful Dravidian architecture of the south, there is so much grandeur to see. Umaid Bhawan Palace, Rajasthan

You may now know Umaid Bhawan as the place where the nuptials of Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas were held. But this residence of the former royal family of Jodhpur was named after Maharaja Umaid Singh who laid its foundations way back in 1929. Boasting of 347 rooms, the Umaid Bhawan Palace was initially built to help farmers and escape a curse. The use of golden yellow coloured sandstone, Makrana marble and Burmese teak wood lends a regal look to the palace which is lined with beautiful paintings depicting Rajputs.

Mysore Palace, Karnataka

Mysore is the ‘City of Palaces’ but the Mysore Palace which is situated within the old fort is home to the Wadiyar dynasty and one of the most spectacular palaces in the city. Constructed in the 19th Century, the Mysore Palace is visited by over 6 million tourists annually. The Indo-Saracenic style of the palace has hints of Hindu, Mughal, Rajput, and Gothic architecture.

Falaknuma Palace, Telangana

Hyderbad, the city of Nizams, is home to the Falaknuma Palace which was built in the shape of a scorpion! It has changed hands over the years, with many Nizams falling in love with its beauty. The highlights of the Falaknuma Palace include its fresco paintings and a manually operated organ which is one of its kind in the entire world.

Laxmi Vilas Palace, Gujarat

With a size four times than that of Britain’s Buckingham Palace, the Laxmi Vilas Palace is the perfect example of Indian meets European architecture. Built in 1890 by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III, the Laxmi Vilas Palace in Vadodara is a sight to behold. Now, a heritage hotel, the palace is replete with marks of a medieval time.

Ujjayanta Palace, Tripura

Not many people look to the northeastern part of India to visit palaces but one visit to the Ujjayanta Palace in Agartala and you will forget this notion. Built between 1899 to 1901, the palace was once home to the Maharaja Radha Kishore Manikya who sold it to the government of Tripura in the 70s. Its neoclassical architecture is a highlight and there’s a Chinese Room inside which was built by artisans from the country.
