Elephant Falls
A major tourist attraction, Elephant Falls is located 12 kilometres outside Shillong. Traditionally named as Ka Kshaid Lai Pateng Khohsiew by the local Khasi tribe, it got its new name under the British regime. The fall, which comprises of 3 rivers, was named owing to its elephant shaped rock structure. Besides being a perfect spot for family picnics, the mighty falls also attract solo explorers and a number of nature photographers.
Shillong Peak
Standing tall at an impressive height of 1962 mts, Shillong peak is city’s highest point. In case you want to see the mesmerizing view of the city, lush green hills and waterfalls, this is the place to be. Besides this, the peak also gives tourists a clear view of the Himalayas and Bangladesh plains. Just in case you are looking for a visual treat, we suggest getting on with your trekking; the entire journey is packed with scenic views. The highest point on the peak is dedicated to U Shulong, a local deity who is considered to keep a protective eye on the city.

Laitlum Canyon
Located 45 mins outside Shillong, Laitlum canyon is known for its heavenly view of majestic hills and grand canyons. The locale’s name - Laitlum means ‘The End of the world’ or ‘the end of the hills’ in Khasi language. Given the fact that the beautiful locale is not crowded and commercial, it attracts a number of explorers, photographers and nature lovers. We do not recommend travelling to the area without a camera, you don’t want to miss out on those heavenly views.
Umiam Lake
Built as a part of the Umiam Dam in the 1960s the lake is stretched over 220 sq. km. It is a stop destination for all the water sports enthusiasts who want to indulge in kayaking, water cycling, and even speed boating. Adding glory to its splendour is Lum Nehru Park which is frequented by a number of visitors.
