Lakshadweep is a Union Territory that remains mostly unexplored. However, recently it was in the news because two of its beaches have made it to the list of Blue Beaches, a label given to the destinations that are eco-friendly and cleanest among the lot.
The certification is given by the Foundation for Environment Education in Denmark (FEE) to tourist spots that adhere to the highest quality standards of cleanliness. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the residents of the Union Territory for receiving the Blue tag.
Hence, apart from its pristine beauty, there is one more reason added to the list why you must plan your next holiday in Lakshadweep. Here is a list of islands to explore.
Agatti Islands
It is the crown jewel among the island group that make up Lakshadweep. Located on the coral isles, it is also counted among a handful of islands that are inhabited by approximately 8,000 people.
From rich flora to stunning geographical formations, it is a paradise for people who prefer beaches over mountains. It is the only island in the cluster that has an airport, making it accessible from different parts of the world.
Kalpeni Islands
Kalpeni islands is a group of three islands - Cheriyam, Tillakam, and Pitti. It has a picturesque landscape that will leave you astounded. All three islands have natives living there.
This cluster of islands is also famous for its rich corals and water sports. If you are an adventure enthusiast, you can enjoy snorkelling, canoeing, scuba diving, sailing yachts, reef walking, and kayaking.
Kadmat
Kadmat is a part of Amindivi, a subgroup of islands in the Lakshadweep archipelago. It has sunkissed shores, blue waters, vibrant corals and white sandy beaches that are perfect to spend a day or enjoy an evening or moonlit walk.
This island is also known for indulging tourists in activities like paragliding, kayaking, snorkelling and scuba diving. Places to stay here also include massage centres and spa services.
Minicoy Island
Minicoy or Maliku is one of the 36 islets of the Union Territory. Located in the midst of the Arabian Sea, the islands spread over 4.8 sq km. It is famous for luxurious beach resorts and a serene destination for tourists to experience tranquillity. Winter is the best season to enjoy a holiday here.

Bangaram Island
It is a tiny island in Lakshadweep with a population of only 10 people and one beach resort. The government of India is promoting tourism here. However, until water sports and activities could be carried out here, you can still enjoy a serene sunset and sunrise.

Kavaratti Islands
Spanning over 3.93 sq. Km, Kavaratti Islands is an abode with five submerged banks, 12 atolls and three coral reefs. Boasting a mesmerising view of the Arabian Sea, the island is also known for its coconut trees. The nearest airport to this island is Agatti. In the years to come, Kavaratti Islands would be developed into a smart city.
