Hair is our crowning glory. Having healthy, smooth, shiny, lustrous, and nourished hair all through the year is what every woman dreams of. However, due to changing weather conditions, chemical treatments, application of styling products and everyday wear and tear, the hair often ends up looking dull and damaged.

The winter season is especially notorious for wrecking the perfect hair game. It can be really tough on your hair as the cold, dry and harsh weather often leaves the hair dehydrated and prone to breakage .

Your hair and scalp require extra TLC during winters. To revive your hair in the winter season and keep them healthy in cold and chilly weather, here's a winter essential guide to keep dandruff, flaky and itchy scalp at bay from Ms Agnes Chen, Hair Expert (Technical Manager, Streax Professional).

Scalp Care

  • Cover your scalp and head, with a hat or scarf, to protect your hair from the damages of extreme cold seasons whenever possible.
  • Massage your scalp gently with some warm oil using your fingertips. . A massage helps stimulate the blood cells on the scalp and increases blood flow resulting in a healthy well-balanced scalp and hair growth.
  • Use sulphate free shampoo to prevent stripping of moisture and sebum from the scalp.
  • Avoid using hair dryers, extreme indoor heating etc as it tends to dry the scalp and cause flaky skin.

Haircare

  • Hair gets dry, rough and brittle during the winter months. Use a sulphate free shampoo as it is gentle and does not strip away excess moisture and oil from the hair.
  • It is important to get rid of split ends with a good haircut.
  • A deep conditioning treatment, with a moisturising mask or conditioner, is a must during the winter months. This helps to preserve moisture and oil, seals the cuticle, and makes the hair soft, smooth, and nourished. So even a spa, occasionally, is highly recommended.
  • Wet hair is a little difficult to dry naturally during winters. Apply a heat protecting serum or spray on the hair, before using any heat devices on your hair.

Dandruff

  • Dandruff is not only a sign of dry scalp but also occurs when the scalp becomes too oily. In winters people spend more time indoors in excessively heated rooms which leads to dry, warm air that affects the scalp.
  • Flaky dandruff usually in winters is a gathering of white flakes and dust on the scalp. This is usually accompanied by itching and can be very embarrassing. Anti-dandruff treatments are available in most professional salons and usually require 4 to 6 sittings.
  • It is recommended to use good anti-dandruff shampoos which mostly contain salicylic acid and zinc pyrithione. Apply the shampoo and leave for 2-3 minutes before rinsing with lukewarm water.
