In the past few years when Korean skincare regime started catching up with the world and finally hit Indian stores, facial essence was one of the steps that still has many confused about its role since we are already using a serum. Here is a detailed piece on how a facial essence functions with a DIY recipe to make it at home so you do not have to spend money at all.

What is a facial essence?

Essence is not a toner for starters. Many confuse it with one. It is a liquid that makes sure your moisturiser stays on like a primer for makeup with added benefits. It has a little similarity to the serum but has lesser molecular weight than most daily creams. Its function is to dive deeper into the skin than a moisturiser does. It rebalances and hydrates your skin with concentrated levels of active ingredients. It paves a path for the next step of your beauty product to seep in deeper as well. An essence is important if you want dewy skin.

How to use a facial essence?

You don't rub in an essence. There is a way of applying it as well. The foremost rule is to ditch the cotton pad. Many make this mistake of pouring 2-3 pumps of it on a cotton pad and sweeping it across the face. This way you are just wasting the product. Treat the essence like a face serum, take a few drops on your hand and press it on your skin with your palm. Do not drag your hand on the skin.

DIY Facial Essence

You will need:

  • Aloe Vera Juice (or Rosewater)
  • Vegetable Glycerin
  • Oil of your choice.
  • Empty spray bottle

How to make it:

aloe

Take a small bottle of about 50 ml so that it is travel friendly as well. But if you are using a new bottle then wash it with water once and then use some rubbing alcohol to sanitise it. Even alcohol wipes do wonders. Then fill 85% of the bottle with the aloe vera juice which is a major agent in moisturising your skin. Next comes glycerin which is derived from coconut oil or palm oil or soybean. It has oxygen, hydrogen and carbon which makes an emollient that gives the skin a moist and smooth texture. Glycerin should have no smell and no colour.

The next ingredient we use is the oil which should be taken as per your skin type. For the dry skinned ladies, I recommend argam or jojoba oil or even avocado works as they all heal dry patches. If you have oily skin then go for maracuja or grapeseed oil, and even tea tree oil is good for you. On combination skin, coconut oil and even jojoba oil do a great job. So add a few drops of this oil in the mist and shake the bottle well.

Spray it on your face after using a toner. Once the layer of the mist sets in, we continue with rest of the Korean skincare steps which are serum, moisturiser, sunscreen or at night we use a sleeping mask.
