1. Choose The Right Wand For Your Lashes

Selecting the correct mascara wand is crucial for achieving the right effect. According to Rohini Lal, “Most people make the common mistake of choosing the wrong wand for their eyelashes. Naturally long and thick lashes just need an enhancer, whereas shorter, sparser lashes require a wand with fine bristles or a curler for better lift and definition.” If your lashes are naturally thick, a simple defining mascara will work. For short or sparse lashes, a wand with small bristles helps separate and lengthen them more effectively.

2. Prime And Curl Your Lashes First

Before applying mascara, prepping your lashes is essential. Rohini Lal explains, “Priming the lashes is often an overlooked step, but it helps the mascara adhere better and last longer.” Lash primers also nourish and condition the lashes, making them more receptive to mascara. After applying the primer, use a lash curler. Rohini suggests, “Instead of clamping it down straight, start firmly at the base and slowly pull it upwards in a curl.” This technique ensures a natural, lifted look.

3. Wipe Off Excess Mascara From The Wand

Too much mascara on the wand leads to clumping. Rohini advises, “Before applying mascara, make sure to wipe off any excess product from the wand. Carefully wipe the tip as well, as it tends to hold more product than the rest of the wand.” This step ensures a smooth and even application, preventing messy, overloaded lashes.

4. Apply Mascara In Layers

Proper layering is the secret to fuller lashes. Rohini Lal recommends, “Coat the lashes horizontally before vertically, and do not dip the wand back into the bottle too soon.” Start with a lengthening mascara by wiggling the wand from the base to the tips. Let it sit before applying another coat. For extra drama, Rohini suggests, “Use a volumising mascara to add thickness and hold the curl.”

5. Fix Clumps And Let It Dry Properly

If you accidentally apply too much mascara, don’t worry! Rohini advises, “Use a clean spoolie and comb it through in the same fashion as the application. Repeat it until there are no unnecessary clumps.” Additionally, avoid blinking fully right after applying mascara. Rohini warns, “Avoid fully opening your eyelids immediately after applying mascara to prevent smudging.” Let your lashes dry before continuing with the rest of your makeup.
