This winter, skincare trends are shifting toward slower and more intentional routines. One method gaining widespread attention is the Korean-inspired 4-2-4 skincare rule, a structured cleansing approach designed to address dryness, tightness, and barrier stress common during colder months. Rooted in the philosophy of gentle care rather than aggressive cleansing, the method emphasises balance and hydration. Its growing popularity reflects a larger movement toward mindful skincare that prioritises long-term skin health over quick fixes.
Highlighting the growing focus on mindful winter skincare, Dr Mili Sinha, Aesthetic Physician at La Clinique and expert at Oteria, explains, “The 4-2-4 skincare rule is a cleansing method that involves four minutes of oil cleansing, two minutes of foam or gel cleansing, and four minutes of rinsing. It is designed to dissolve makeup, sunscreen, and impurities while ensuring thorough yet balanced cleansing. But there is no clinical research validating the exact time durations. Time-specific protocols are cultural or ritualistic, not dermatologically standardised. Indian skin types, particularly Fitzpatrick IV–V, are more prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and often have higher sebaceous activity, making them more vulnerable to barrier disruption. Prolonged exposure to cleansers or excessive rinsing can increase the risk of irritation, breakouts, and pigmentation rather than improving skin health. While the 4-2-4 method may work as a mindful framework, Indian skin benefits more from gentle, time-flexible cleansing that prioritises barrier repair and personalisation over strict adherence to trending routines.”
Rooted in Korean beauty philosophy, the 4-2-4 method is built on patience and intention. The first four minutes of oil cleansing gently melt away makeup, sunscreen, and the invisible residue of the day, while a slow facial massage stimulates circulation and revives winter-dulled skin. This is followed by two minutes of a gentle, water-based cleanse that removes remaining impurities without robbing the skin of moisture—because winter skin craves care, not harshness. The final four minutes of rinsing feel like a quiet reset, leaving the face refreshed, calm, and ready to breathe again.

Its emphasis on balance is what makes the 4-2-4 method especially appealing during colder months. Rather than frequent washing or abrasive scrubbing, it promotes attentive cleansing that preserves hydration and strengthens the skin barrier. Incorporating gentle, hydrating foam cleansers enriched with botanicals and skin-loving actives can further elevate the experience. Ingredients like white tea extract and niacinamide help soothe irritation while clearing impurities, while formulas infused with aloe vera, niacinamide, and salicylic acid support hydration and pore-level cleansing during the foam step. Together, these ingredients create a soft, refreshing lather that cleans effectively without stripping moisture, leaving skin supple, balanced, and comfortable even in the heart of winter.
However, the logic of double cleansing is well established, but the exact timing of the 4-2-4 method has not been validated by controlled studies. The benefits appear to come from thorough yet gentle cleansing rather than from the minutes themselves. Cleansing should remove surface debris without prolonged contact. Most dermatology guidelines suggest a gentle massage for 20–60 seconds, not several minutes, especially with foaming products. While extended massage may enhance sensorial experience, longer contact with surfactants has been shown to increase barrier disruption, particularly in sensitive, acne-prone, or pigmentation-prone skin.

Rinsing is important to remove cleanser residue and restore surface comfort, but there is no evidence that prolonged rinsing improves cleansing efficacy. Over-rinsing, especially with hard or hot water, can strip natural moisturising factors, worsen winter dryness, and trigger sensitivity. Slower routines can improve compliance, encourage gentler touch and reduce aggressive scrubbing. Stress reduction and routine consistency do correlate with better skin outcomes, especially in inflammatory conditions like acne, eczema, and rosacea.
The strength of the 4-2-4 method may lie less in its timing and more in its emphasis on gentle, intentional skincare and avoidance of hurried, harsh cleansing. While the concept of double cleansing is scientifically sound, the specific time structure of the 4-2-4 method is not supported by clinical data. For Indian skin, where barrier health and pigmentation risk are key concerns, cleansing should prioritise gentleness and personalisation over fixed durations.
