Do you know your skin shifts to repair mode when you are off to sleep? No wonder why dermatologists recommend following a night skincare routine. Night is the time when your skin is in the safest environment, away from harmful sun rays, polluted air, and stressors that damage your skin in the long run. So, if you don't have a night time skincare routine already, time you build one. However, your nighttime routine is pointless if you don't have the right skincare products.
We spoke to Dr. Rashmi Shetty, Global Dermatology Expert, Founder of Ra Skin & Aesthetics and asked her to share a quick guide for beginners on finding the right night time skincare products.
Why Is Skincare Important At Night?
● The moisture levels of the skin at night are low due to transepidermal water loss thus our skin needs some hydration at night.
● The protective barrier of the skin is more absorptive at night so it is a good time to use skincare products.
● Cell renewal occurs more rapidly at night.
● Natural detoxification of skin takes place at night.
Dr. Shetty recommended three key ingredients while hunting for skincare products for the night routine.
1. Retinol
Retinol, one of the most talked about ingredients in the beauty world these days, is derived from Vitamin A. It has multiple benefits for our skin. It is great for acne prone skin. It keeps the pores clear by reducing the build up of skin cells, thus restricting breakouts and redness that comes along with acne. It is also a great ingredient for ageing skin as it helps achieve a brighter, smoother skin. It also stimulates collagen production, further reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Our expert recommended using retinol at night instead of the day since it doesn’t work in the presence of sunlight.
2. Niacinamide
Another ingredient getting a lot of love from skin aficionados is niacinamide. It is one of the two forms of Vitamin B3 and has plenty of benefits for the skin.
● Niacinamide minimises enlarged pores
● This ingredient improves uneven skin tone
● It helps restore the skin's surface against moisture loss

Niacinamide is most effective when used as a serum. Make sure you apply it thoroughly on a cleansed face.
3. Hyaluronic Acid
Hyaluronic acid is a common ingredient found in moisturising creams, lotions and serums. The ingredient is known to give you a plumper skin. When applied topically, it attracts the moisture from the deeper layers of the skin to the top layers. It prevents water loss from your skin and keeps your skin hydrated for long. Unlike other ingredients, hyaluronic acid can be used during both day and night.
