We all want good skin, dream about the perfect mane, striking eyes and the glow that we see actresses flaunt. However, the catch in this path is ultimately all about the amount we are ready to spend. What if we say that all these amazing products ranging from a simple lipstick to eyebrow pomades to your anti-ageing creams can be made at home? Years ago when these big brands did not exist, beauty came in a box without a label. It was all homemade using ingredients found in gardens and kitchens. So why not save money, use this quarantine time and make full use of the easily available herbs, spices, and flowers, etc to make 21 effective products you didn't know could be prepared at home? From makeup to skincare, this guide will walk you through three weeks of DIY, keeping in mind the different skin, hair types that we all have. Tap in the zest of your ancestors and get started right away!
WEEK 1
Dedicate the first week to your hair. Here are some DIY recipes for making different products using natural ingredients.
Day 1
Hair Repair Oils
Oil is one integral step for us Indian women especially. It helps us in strengthening our hair and maintaining or bringing back the luster the mane has lost. Repair oils have in them some more ingredients that are meant to give a little ‘extra’ to the locks. But you don’t need to go buying these oils, there is nothing we cannot make using home ingredients.
For Long Hair
Long hair looks beautiful when it is maintained, however it is not a very easy task. If the growth of your tresses is not good then make this solution.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup coconut oil
- 2 tbsp Aloe Vera gel (transparent)
Method
Warm the coconut oil and mix in the aloe vera but do not place the gel in direct heat.
Leave the gel in for 3 to 4 hours.
Once the mixture cools down filter it into a glass bottle and keep it closed.
Before sleeping at night, massage your scalp with the solution for 10-15 minutes.
In the morning, wash it off with a mild shampoo.
Do this twice to three times a week and see the difference.
For Black Hair
If your white hair is giving you sleepless nights then there may be a solution. Using natural ingredients, you can make a very good and effective oil at home. This mixture is a major source of antioxidants that helps in shielding the hair follicles from getting damaged and prevent white hair.
Ingredients
- 2 tsp amla powder
- 3 tbsp coconut oil
Method
Add the two ingredients in a pan and heat well.
Once the amla powder mixes well in the oil, remove it from the heat.
Now let the solution cool down and then pour it in a jar.
You can store this solution in a fridge for 2 weeks.
Apply the oil every night and wash it off with a sulphate free mild shampooo.
This will help in preventing white hair.
To Prevent Hair Fall
If you are experiencing hair fall then this tonic is what your beloved crown needs.
Ingredients
- 3 medium-size onions
- 1/2 bowl curry leaves
- 500 ml olive oil or coconut oil
Method
Heat coconut oil in a pan on a low flame.
Then add curry leaves to it.
Once the oil starts boiling, add chopped onions and cook this mixture for 40 minutes.
Now, cool down the mixture and pour it in a glass jar and store in the fridge.
You can store it for 3 weeks atleast.
Apply the mixture to your scalp thrice a week.
Do this ritual before going to bed.
To prevent Dandruff
If your scalp is marred by dandruff then rgis solution with orange and lemon should do the trick.
Ingredients
- 2 tbsp lemon peel powder
- 2 tbsp orange peel powder
- 1-litre water
- 500 ml coconut oil
Method
Dry the peels and powder them.
Now pour water in a pot and heat it.
Take another bowl and make like a double boiler and heat coconut oil in it.
Add the two powders to this oil and cook for 20 minutes.
Let the solution cool down and then pour it into a glass jar.
You can store this mixture for 3 weeks in a fridge.
Whenever you want to use this oil, warm it for 10 seconds and then apply.
Do so thrice a week and keep it overnight.
This will help in getting rid of dandruff.
Day 2
Sulphate free, Natural DIY Shampoo
Make your own shampoo as per the texture of your hair with these ingredients.
Dry hair
If you have dry hair, then this mixture will come to your rescue.
Ingredients
- 7 drops lavender essential oil
- 7 drops geranium essential oil
- ¼ cup liquid castile soap
- ¼ cup water
- ¼ cup aloe vera gel
- 1 tsp glycerin
- ½ tsp vitamin E oil
Method
Add water, aloe vera gel, vitamin E oil, and vegetable glycerin to a glass bowl and blend with a blender to make a solution.
Now pour in the liquid Castile soap and blend.
Add the essential oils, drop by drop and mix.
Now pour the mixture into a glass bottle using a funnel.
Your homemade shampoo for dry hair is ready!
Oily hair
If you have an oily scalp then a mixture of you honey , lavender oil, and apple cider vinegar is what you need to maintain pH balance.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 tbsp honey
- 1 tsp lavender oil
- 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
- 30 ml water
Method
Mix all the ingredients well and store them in a glass jar.
Wash your hair with this hair 3 times a week.
Dandruff
Coconut milk is great for dandruff as it is antimicrobial, and it has antifungal properties.
Ingredients
- ½ cup coconut milk
- 1/2 cup lather -free shampoo
- ½ cup glycerin
- 4 tsp coconut oil
Method
Take a bowl and mix in the glycerin and coconut oil.
Now add the coconut milk and shampoo. Mix well.
Fill it in a bottle and wash your hair every 2 days.
This solution can be stored in the fridge for a week.
Day 3
Natural Conditioner
After the shampoo, what we need is a layering of a good and hydrating conditioner .
Dry hair
Dry hair needs aloe vera gel which saves the If you hair follicles from getting damaged.
Ingredients
- 1 lemon juice
- 3 tbsp aloe vera gel
- 4 drops peppermint essential oil
Method
Mix all the ingredients and fill them in a glass jar.
Apply this condition to the hair after shampooing and let it stay for 20 minutes.
Then wash off with lukewarm water.
Oily hair
Use a mint conditioner since it is antimicrobial, antifungal and antibacterial.
Ingredients
- 6 tbsp coconut oil
- 1 tbsp jojoba oil
- ½ tsp argan oil
- 5 tsp mint juice
Method
Mix all the ingredients well and fill them in a bottle.
Apply this condition to the hair after shampooing and rinse with lukewarm water after 20 minutes.
Dandruff
When your scalps’ pH balance has more acid in it then it tends to make your hair frizzier and leads to dandruff. But some kitchen ingredients when used properly in the right amount then they can help us out.
Ingredients
- 250 ml water
- 1 tsp curry leaves powder
- 1 tsp fenugreek powder
- 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
Method
Boil the curry leaves in water and dry them.
Put fenugreek seeds in the same water and boil.
Don’t throw this water as we will use it to make the conditioner.
No w, dry the fenugreek seeds and curry leaves and make a powder.
Put all the ingredients in the water you were left with after boiling the seeds and the leaves and store in a glass jar.
You can store this solution for two weeks in a fridge.
Apply this every time you shampoo.
Day-4
Chemical-free hair spray
To set your hair you often use a hair spray which in the market is available but then it is loaded with chemicals. These chemicals can lead to many issues including hair fall. So make it at home using natural ingredients.
Ingredients
- 1 cup water
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1tbsp lemon juice
- 5 drops of any essential oil
Method
Melt all the sugar in some water.
Now add lemon juice to it.
Next take an essential oil of your choice and add to this mixture.
Fill the mixture in a spray bottle which can be stored for a week.
Day 5
Homemade Hair Colour
Why spend money on hair colour available in the market which has so many chemicals, when you can make your own using natural ingredients?
Ingredients
- 100 gms amla powder
- 250 ml water
Method
Roast the amla powder in a wok till it turns black and then add water to the powder.
Make a paste on high heat and apply it to the hair.
Do this thrice a week and see the colour change.
Day 6
Natural Hair Serum
Ingredients
- 4 cups aloe vera gel
- 2 tbsp coconut oil
- ½ tbsp rose water
- 2 vitamin E capsules
- 12 drops jasmine oil
Method
Take a blender and put the aloe vera gel in it and then add in the rose water, coconut oil and vitamin E capsule to it.
Make a smooth paste and add the jasmine oil drops to it and fill it in a spray bottle.
Take two drops of this serum and apply it on the tips of your hair. Do not use this serum on your scalp and store this cream for 3 weeks.
This cream works like a mask so use this before shampoo and keep it for a few hours.
Day 7
Hair gel & Mist
Soften your hair with a homemade gel and mist.
Hair mist
Ingredients
- 3 tbsps coconut oil
- 1 cup rose water
Method
First, melt the coconut oil in a bowl and add 1 cup of rose water to it.
Mix it well.
Now fill this solution in a spray bottle.
Every time you have to wash your hair, spray this solution on the tresses atleast half an hour before. Go from the top to the ends of your hair strands, hair roots are also important.
After spraying, give your hair a light massage.
Hair Gel
If you use hair gel for setting then you can make one using flax seeds which are a major source of omega-3 fatty acids. Not only this, it also has vitamin B1 and dietary fiber.
Ingredients
- ¾ cup water
- 4 tsp flaxseed
- 7 drops any essential oil
- 2 tbsp aloe vera gel
Method
Boil the flax seeds in water and then grind them into a paste.
Now, add the oil to the paste and mix well.
Next, add aloe vera gel and mix well.
Your hair gel is ready and you can store this in the fridge for 10 days
Week 2
This week we will work on our skincare products.
Day 8
Face Wash & Toner
All Skin Types
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 tsp almond oil
- ¼ cup aloe vera gel
- 2 tsp rose water
Method
You just have to mix all these ingredients and your face wash is ready.
Face toner
A face toner helps in the maintenance of the skin’s pH balance.
Normal skin
Ingredients
- ¼ cup apple cider vinegar
- 3/4 cup green tea water
Method
Mix both the ingredients and then store in a spray bottle.
Sensitive skin
Ingredients
- 1 cup rose water
- 1 cup aloe vera gel
Method
Combine both and fill in a spray bottle and use.
Acne-prone skin
Ingredients
- 2 drops of tea tree oil
- 1 cup chamomile tea water
Method
Mix both the ingredients and fill them in the bottle.
Oily skin
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup rose water
- 1/2 cup witch hazel
- 1/2 cup aloe vera gel
Method
Mix the three together, your toner is ready.
Day 9
Homemade moisturiser and night cream
Moisturiser
All Skin Types
Ingredients
- 1 tsp rose water
- 1 tsp aloe gel
Method
Mix these two ingredients and apply on your face. You can also double or triple the quantity of the ingredients and store in a glass jar. Store for a week in a fridge.
Night cream
Ingredients
- 2 tbsp rose water
- 1tbsp coconut oil
- 1 vitamin E capsule
- 1/2 tbsp glycerin
- 1/2 tbsp tea tree oil
Method
Mix coconut oil and tea tree oil and heat them a little to combine.
Next, add all the remaining ingredients and mix it well.
Your homemade night cream is ready.
Apply this every night before sleeping and store in a glass jar.
Day -10
Eye Serum
If you have dark circles then this serum will work wonders but give it a few days.
Ingredients
- ½ tbsp cucumber juice
- ½ tsp honey
- ½ tsp rose water
- ½ tbsp aloevera gel
- ½ tsp castor oil
- ½ tsp almond oil
Method
Mix all these ingredients in a glass jar and store in a fridge. It can easily last for 25 days.
Apply every night before sleeping and then do not look at your phone screens to make it more effective.

Day 11
Face serum
Ingredients
- 2 tbsp aloe vera gel
- 2 tbsp rose water
- 2 vitamin E capsules
- 1/2 tsp almond oil
Method
Mix all these ingredients well and fill them in a spray bottle.
Apply this syrup on the face 2 times a day, but apply just 3 to 4 drops of the serum each time.
Sunscreen
Day 12
Lip balm
Ingredients
- 1 tbsp petroleum jelly
- 1 tsp lemon juice
- 1tsp honey
Method
Take a bowl and melt the Vaseline in it.
Now, add the lemon juice and add the honey.
Mix this mixture well and fill it in a good quality plastic box.
Freeze it for 4 hours after the mixture cools down.
Face bleach
Instead of reaching out for chemical-based bleaches make it at home using natural ingredients.
Ingredients
- 1 tsp turmeric
- 1 tsp lemon juice
- 1 tsp rose water
Method
Mix all the ingredients and apply it.
Keep it for 20 minutes and wash off with cold water.
Always remember that you should never apply lemon directly on your face.
Day 13
Face Packs
To get clear skin and get rid of pimples
Neem, basil and turmeric face pack
Ingredients
- 4 basil leaves
- 3 neem leaves
- ½ tsp turmeric
- ½ tsp lemon juice
Method
Grind the leaves in mortar and pestle or hamam jista.
Add the lemon juice and turmeric to this mixture and mix.
Apply this paste and keep it for 15 minutes.
Wash off with cold water.
Apply this face pack thrice a week to see the best results.
For Soft & glowing skin
Rice flour and sandalwood face pack
Ingredients
- 1 tsp sandalwood powder
- ½ tbsp milk powder
- 1 tbsp rice flour
- 1 tbsp besan
- 1 tbsp rose water
Method
Mix all the ingredients together to a smooth paste.
Apply it on the face and massage it for 5 minutes.
Keep it for 15 minutes and then wash it off.
Apply this pack twice a week and do not forget to apply a toner after washing off.
Day 14
Face Scrub
It is important to exfoliate your skin atleast twice a week but do so with homemade ingredients.
Oily skin
Ingredients
- ½ tsp coffee
- 1 tsp almond oil
Method
Mix both and apply on the face.
Wash off with cold water and then apply a moisturiser.
Dry skin
Ingredients
- ½ tsp orange peel powder
- 1 tsp coconut oil
Method
Mix both ingredients and scrub gently on the face and neck and then wash it off with cold water.
WEEK 3
This week we will make our own basic makeup products ranging from kajal, mascara to lipstick and more.
Day-15
Sandalwood & Almond Mascara
Kajal is an important makeup product for most women. Many of us do not even step out of the house without a swipe of kajal. So here is a DIY that will help you make it at home.
Ingredients
- 2 tbsp sandalwood powder
- 4 almonds
Method
Add water to sandalwood powder and prepare a paste.
Now burn a diya with ghee and roast the almonds with the help of a fork, until they turn black.
Now make its powder.
Mix it with sandalwood paste and close it in a box.
Day-16
Organic lipstick
Ingredients
- 2 tsp almond oil
- 2 drops of essential oil of your choice for fragrance.
- 1 lipstick tube
- 6 tsp beetroot powder
- 1 tsp beeswax
- 1 tsp shea butter
Method
Melt the wax and add almond oil to it.
Add the shea butter and let it melt.
Now mix in the beetroot powder and the essential oil to it.
Transfer into a lipstick tube and refrigerate.
Day-17
Face Primer
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 tsp aloe vera gel
- 1 tsp moisturiser that you made above
- 2 pumps of the foundation you use
Method
Mix all the ingredients and store in a small jar or a small pump bottle if you have.
BB Cream
Ingredient
- 1 tbsp aloe vera gel
- 1 tsp sunscreen that you made above
- 1 tsp moisturiser that you made above
- 1 tsp foundation
Method
Take a small glass vial or jar and add moisturiser to it along with aloe vera gel to it.
Now mix whatever sunscreen you use, in it.
Now add foundation according to your skin tone.
If your skin is very oily, then skip the moisturiser in it.
You can use it for 4 months.
Day-18
Cream Blush
To make a blush we will use ingredients that not just add colour to your cheeks but are very good for your skin as well. The key ingredient being beetroot, it is an antioxidant and has anti-inflammatory and antiaging properties.
Ingredients
- A pinch of cinnamon powder (for dark shade)
- A pinch of ginger powder (for light shade)
- 2 tbsp beetroot powder
- 1 tbsp arrowroot powder
- 2 lavender essential oil and if you are allergic to lavender, you can use rose oil.
- ½ tsp carrier oil (coconut oil or almond oil, whichever you like)
Method
Blend all these ingredients and store in a glass jar.
Use it with the help of a blush brush
You can store this blush for 6 weeks.
Day-19
Gel eyeliner with activated charcoal powder
Ingredients
- 2 tsp activated charcoal powder
- 1 tsp aloe vera gel
Method
Mix both and fill a small jar.
Use an eyeliner brush to apply.
Day-20
Mascara
Ingredients
- 1/2 tsp coconut oil
- 1 tsp aloe vera gel
- ½ tsp beeswax
- 1/8 tsp castor oil
- ¼ tsp activated charcoal powder
- ⅛ tsp clay
- 5 drops lavender oil
Method
Mix all these ingredients well together and use them by filling in an empty mascara bottle or you could even store it in a normal bottle and apply with a spoolie.
Day-21
Makeup Remover
Ingredients
- ½ tbsp baby shampoo
- 1/4 tsp coconut oil
- 1 cup of water
- Cotton pads or balls
- A glass jar
Method
Take a glass jar and pour all the ingredients and shake well until you see a whitish solution.
Now take all the cotton pads that can fit in the jar and leave it overnight.
You will see that all the solution has been soaked in the pads.
You can easily remove all the makeup with it and it even gets rid of waterproof makeup.
You can store it for 6 weeks.
Now that we have a sorted plan for three weeks, try them all and see what all works for you. Now before you apply them directly, especially the eye serum and creams and the cosmetic products, it is best to do a test patch on your arm. Leave it for 24 hours. If nothing happens then it is good to use but if notthen it is best to skip it. All natural ingredients may not suit all skin types.
