Anyone who shaves or waxes regularly will know how irritating an ingrown hair is. If you ever had one, you’d know how annoying it is. Ingrown hairs occur when the hair is trapped within the skin, leading to inflammation, or sometimes infection also.
According to experts, “Ingrown hairs are caused by irritation of the hair follicle. Wherever you injure a hair or carry out any sort of hair removal process, it can grow back at a different angle and get caught under the skin.”
Many ingrown hairs will disappear with time. It is best to heal them on their own and take preventive measures. But what about those who aren’t healing on their own? Is there any solution for them? How do we get rid of them? Scroll down to find out.
Step 1: Softening The Skin
Soften the skin by applying warm washcloth on the affected area. It’ll also help open up the pore.
Step 2: Exfoliation
Gentle exfoliation is a must for your skin. It’ll not only prevent ingrown hair, but it’ll also help hair to grow in the same direction. So gently exfoliate using a chemical exfoliator. This will remove any dead skin that’s clogging your pores and trapping the hair follicle.
Step 3: Moisturizing
If your skin is swelling, apply a small drop of tea tree oil on it. A drop of tea tree oil will nourish your skin.
Step 4: Never Pluck Your Hair!

If a hair is popped out, use a sterilized pair of tweezers to pluck it. But if it's buried in the skin, do not pluck it out, as it’ll cause a localized infection.
How To Prevent Them From Occurring
There’s no permanent solution to this problem, but there are some ways to prevent them from occurring.
Exfoliation
Exfoliation scrapes away the dead skin cells that accumulate on the skin. Scrubbing the legs with an exfoliation body wash before shaving can really avoid ingrown hairs. It is enough to pull ingrown hairs outside the skin.
Try A Dry Brush
Rubbing a dry brush on the skin, scrapes away all the dead skin cells, revealing softer skin underneath. Removing the dead skin layer clears the pores and prevents hair from growing.

Shaving creams moisturize your skin and reduce friction. By reducing friction, shaving cream reduces the risk of irritation. Avoid creams with high chemicals, they may cause you irritation or inflammation. Opt for natural or hypoallergenic products on your skin.
Right Razor is a must
Many women use regular razors for shaving, which results in occurring of ingrown hairs. A good razor should gently glide onto your skin, leaving behind no missed of half shaven hair. Make sure your razor is sharp, clean and rust-free. Rinse the blade after every stroke and clean the blade by applying alcohol on it.
Shave in direction of hair growth
Hair grows in the same direction. Always shave in the direction of hair growth. Shaving in the opposite direction can cause the hairs to have very sharp tips.
