Facial oil seems to be trending in 2023 more than ever before. With Deepika Padukone introducing sunscreen with an oil-based texture, this year, we are expected to see more such products.

We are not yet over our obsession with facial oils. Women across all age groups are using it. Therefore, we spoke with Dr Samridhi Sharma, Skin & Hair Specialist, Advisor at Clinikally, Gurugram, to understand the benefits of facial oils, who should use them, which options are good for which skin type and more.

Face Oils Vs Serums

Dr Sharma said there are many myths surrounding facial oils. Many think that it is not for their skin, that it will make their face oily, clog pores, or even cause breakouts. However, this is not true. The biggest benefit of applying face oils is that they moisturise the dermal layer as well as prevent it from drying out.

She pointed out that facial oils have been replaced by serums. However, they both work a little differently. Serums get absorbed in the dermal layer quicker than oils. In most cases, oils are extracted from natural sources making them an ideal fit for your skin. However, one must know their skin type and understand what products would suit them.

Benefits Of Facial Oil

Dr Sharma suggests women with oily, combination, sensitive, as well as dry skin types can use facial oils. They improve firmness, maintain hydration, and help regulate sebum production, provided you are using the appropriate product.

Other benefits include:

  • Improving elasticity
  • Decreasing enlargement of pores
  • Neutralising free radicals
  • Loaded with antioxidants
  • Rich in Omega 3, Vitamin A, C and D

According to the dermatologist, our skin needs oil to maintain hydration. Therefore, one can use facial oils once or twice a week. If you have dry skin, fine lines, premature signs of ageing, dullness or patchiness, facial oils can help to replenish the dermal layer and add radiance. In such a case, you can apply oil thrice a week, not more than that.

How To Apply Facial Oil

how to apply facial oil

  • Cleanse your face.
  • Take two to three drops of oil (maximum) and add them to your moisturiser.
  • Apply the mixture to your face by massaging it gently with your finger. It will ensure optimum hydration.
  • If you are applying it directly, pat the product on your skin. Dabbing can make it absorb faster.

Our specialist warns against using a large amount of oil at once because instead of doing good, it can cause more harm. You should also stay cautious of rubbing it aggressively on your face or it will lead to redness.

Facial Oils According To Skin Type

facial oils according to skin type

People with normal skin should use jojoba oil, squalane oil, or coconut oil. They are lightweight on the dermal layer. Extra virgin almond oil and rosehip oil are excellent choices for dry skin because they enhance moisturisation.

Women with combination skin can use tea tree oil, argan oil and grapeseed oil. They provide the right amount of nourishment. Aloe vera oil and moringa oil are good for sensitive skin.

However, if you have acne-prone skin, you should consult with a doctor first and let them decide what would work best for you. If you use the wrong product, it can cause a breakout and harm your skin.

The doctor suggests picking up oils that contain Omega 6, Omega fatty acids, and vitamin E. Such facial oils can help to improve skin texture and can be an impeccable addition to your skincare routine.
