Celebrated on the Ashtami Tithi (eighth day) of the Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapad month, Janmashtami commemorates the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu. On this auspicious day, people visit temples to worship the childhood form of the lord and serve Laddu Gopal at their homes. The idol is decorated and served with 56 offerings. However, just like most years, devotees are confused about the date of the festival’s celebration. While some are stating it falls on August 25, 2024, others are arguing its occurrence on August 26, 2024. We spoke to Jyotishacharya Radhakant Vats from Vrindavan told us when Janmashtami will be celebrated this year, its auspicious time (shubh muhurat) for worship, and its significance.
“The Ashtami Tithi of Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapada month is starting at 3:39 pm on Sunday, August 25, 2024, and will end at 2:19 pm on Monday, August 26, 2024,” says Jyotishacharya ji. Under such conditions, Janmashtami will be commemorated on August 26.
A special yoga is being formed on Janmashtami called Jayanti Yoga this year. This implies that the yoga formed at the actual birth of Lord Krishna's birth in Dwapar Yuga will reform on Janmashtami 2024.
The Hindu scriptures state that Lord Krishna was born on the Ashtami Tithi of Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapada month when the Rohini Nakshatra was in the house of Taurus. The Rohini Nakshatra falls in Taurus this year on August 26 between 3:55 am to 3:38 pm.

Additionally, the Sarvartha Siddhi Yoga is also being formed on Janmashtami 2024. Sarvartha Siddhi Yoga will begin at 3:55 pm on August 26 and conclude at 5:57 am on August 27. The total time for worship on Janmashtami 2024 is 45 minutes, according to Jyotishacharya ji. Worshipping Laddu Gopal, swinging him and decorating his offerings between 12:01 am to 12:45 am on August 26, 2024, will be considered auspicious.
Janmashtami is celebrated to remember the birth of Lord Krishna. Jyotishacharya ji advises devotees to fast on this day and worship Laddu Gopal to invite happiness and prosperity in the family. With Laddu Gopal's blessings in the house, one can be relieved from hindrances and problems related to children.
