Pind Daan is a sacred Hindu ritual performed to honour and appease the souls of departed ancestors. It helps the souls attain salvation and liberates them from the cycle of rebirth. Although traditionally conducted at holy places like Gaya or Varanasi, Pind Daan can also be performed at home with devotion and following proper procedures. Manyyaa Adlakkha, Founder Vastu Guru Manyyaa, Numerologist, Astrologer and Reiki healer shared a step-by-step guide on how you can do Pind Daan at home.
How To Do Pind Daan At Home
Here's how you can do it:
Preparation For The Ritual
Before performing pind daan, cleanliness and purity of the mind and body are important. Take a bath and wear clean, preferably white clothes. The ritual is ideally performed on an Amavasya (new moon day) or during Pitru Paksha, 16 days dedicated to paying homage to ancestors.
Materials Required
You will need a few essential items to perform the ritual at home:
Pind: These are round balls made from rice flour, barley flour, or wheat mixed with black sesame seeds and water. You can prepare them at home or buy them from a nearby store.
Black Sesame Seeds: These are important as they symbolize the removal of sins.
Kusha Grass: It is used for purity and is believed to invite divine blessings.
Flowers And Incense Sticks: These are used for offering and creating a sacred atmosphere.
Water And Ghee: For libations and purity.
A picture or symbolic representation of your ancestors.
Performing Pind Daan
Begin the ritual by sitting in a clean and quiet place, preferably near a tulsi plant or under a peepal tree. Spread a piece of cloth or kusha grass on the ground. Take the pind (rice balls) in your hands and offer them to the ancestors by placing them on the grass. While doing this, chant mantras like "Om Pitrubhyo Namah", asking for peace and forgiveness for your ancestors.
Once the pind is placed, sprinkle water and sesame seeds over the offering. You can also light incense sticks and offer flowers to the pinds. This is followed by offering water (known as tarpan) while chanting the names of your ancestors, expressing gratitude and seeking their blessings.

Concluding The Ritual
After the ritual is complete, pray for the well-being of your ancestors and seek their blessings for prosperity and peace in your life. Once the prayer is done, you can either immerse the pind in flowing water like a river or leave them under a tree for birds and animals, as it's considered auspicious.
