According to ancient scriptures, if you observe a fast of the Vat Savitri, you are advised to read the Katha associated with this fast for the prolonged life of your husband, and happiness, prosperity, good fortune and peace in your family.
It is said that a pious king named Ashvapati ruled Madradesh a long time ago, according to the legend. The king had no children of his own and performed a Yagya to get a child. He was blessed with a baby girl as a result of the Yagya, who he named Savitri. The girl soon grew up and became eligible for marriage. She chose Satyavan as her husband who was the son of Dyumatsena. Dyumatsena also used to be a king, however, he had lost his kingdom and was forced to lead a poor life. The parents of Satyavan were blind and used to cut wood in the forest to make a living. When the proposal of Savitri and Satyavan's marriage came up, Narad Muni told Ashvapati that Satyavan had a short life and that he would die within a year of marriage. The scared father tried a lot to talk Savitri out of marrying Satyavan but she was determined to marry him and they both tied the knot.
Savitri took good care of her in-laws after she got married. Soon after, the day of Satyavan’s death, according to Narad Muni, came and that day, Savitri accompanied Satyavan to the forest. As Satyavan started to climb a tree in the forest to cut wood, he felt excruciating pain in his head. He laid down for some time with his head in his wife’s lap and when the Yamraj came to them with his messengers and started going towards the south with Satyavan's soul, virtuous Savitri started following him. Yamraj turned around, asked her to turn back and told her that she had done her part to serve her husband and that was all she could do. But Savitri said that she would go wherever her husband went.
Pleased with her dedication, Yamraj decided to grant her three wishes. Savitri said that her first wish was for him to return her parents-in-law’s eyesight to which Yamraj replied, “Tathastu.” Next, she wished for the lost kingdom of her father-in-law to be returned to him. For her last wish, she asked to grant her the chance of becoming the mother of Satyavan's hundred sons.
Yamraj was impressed with her devotion and said, “Tathastu.” Savitri said that if you take my husband with you, how will my wish get fulfilled, therefore, he freed Satyavan from the noose. She then returned to the Banyan tree where Satyavan's body was lying and started praying. After some time, Satyavan woke up, Satyavan's parents got their eyesight back, and Satyavan's father got his kingdom back after a while. Since then, the tradition of worshipping the Banyan tree while observing the Vat Savitri Vrat has become a tradition.
